Assignment

Exercise 1: Quantify Data & Visualize Data

Sir Shamsul briefed us on Exercise 1 which we were required to arrange the objects with relevant indicators written out with pens to help us visualize the quantity and data.

I then moved on to searching for small items that I have in my home with huge quantity and then sorting them out to different categories such as sizes & shapes. For this I chose the Malaysian Coin which I have saved in my "tabung".

Figure 1.4 - Exercise 1: Quantify Data & Visualize Data

I have designed it using the Malaysian coins valued at 5, 10, 20 & 50 cents at nine each. It was then put into layers and creating a square shape. As seen above as the coin value goes up the size of the square also increases. As a result, the different values of the coins increases the size of the square shape.

Exercise 2: L.A.T.C.H

Exercise 2 requires me to create a visual poster by using the LATCH principles. I chose L, A, C and H.

L - Location (Map of Los Santos)
A - Alphabet (The different store names)
T - Time
C - Category (Type of stores)
H - Hierarchy (Lowest - Highest number of stores)

After thorough planning, I have chosen that I wanted create poster on the game Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) that I dearly enjoyed planning a few years back. GTA V consist of a map of Los Santos which the city that this game revolves around. The reason I chose this is first and foremost is because I have always enjoyed playing it and it was one of favourite games.

Moreover, coming to this exercise It fits all the requirements as the game involves a map that consist of the LATCH principles. Also the map has a lot of legends / icons there I have simplified it to only include the stores that are most used and sought after in the game.

Sketches:

For the sketches I came up with two different rough sketches of what I intend to design in the digitalisation process.

Digitalized Sketches & Design Process:

For the digitalization process, I chose sketch idea 2 and made a rough digitalized version of my sketches on paper. This allow me to have an idea of how my final poster would look like.

For the icons, I have made it from scratch using the pen tool and curve tool. This allow me to create a similar version to the ones used in GTA V. As seen below, you can see all the points created by the pen tool and the part where it has been curved.

Reflection

Engaging with Exercise 1: Quantify Data & Visualize Data and Exercise 2: L.A.T.C." in individual exercise sessions has been enlightening. Through quantitative analysis and visualization, I gained insights into effectively conveying information and patterns. Understanding L.A.T.C.H. principles deepened my grasp of design psychology. Both topics provided invaluable tools for my data interpretation and design skills. The exercises not only expanded my technical skills but also helped me understand more about using data to make decisions and designing things based on what users need. Overall, the experience was enriching, broadening my perspective and equipping me with practical methodologies crucial in diverse professional settings.
