INSTRUCTIONS
TASKS
For task 2 we were told to design the initials or monogram of our name, first name / last name or our pet's name.
Research
Before designing my initials, I did some brainstorming about myself that I could put into relations with my initial's design. Since I am a bold and minimal person. i have decided to revolve my initials around minimalism and bold designs.
I explored possible designs that I could relate to my design.
Brainstorming
As planned, the design was to have some sort of correlation with how I am as a person. I list down possibilities of my personalities and things that revolve around my life with mind mapping. This helped me categorise informations about myself.
This is what I came up with:
Sketches
Then I started with sketches that I got inspiration from my research and brainstorming.

Digitalisation
Initially I used the 12 fonts that was provided by Mr Vinod and from there I used the pen tool, curve tool and shape tool to create the uniqueness of my design. Moreover, I experimented using brush tools to test out the width and and strokes.
Fig 1.6 - Creating the letter S with shape
For the letter S I experimented with using a rectangle shape, direct selection tool to drag one side of the rectangle to make a slanted angle and the shape building tool to unite all the different shapes as one.
For the letter A I experimented with using a polygon shape and used on side of the polygon to create a rectangle shape for the top part of the letter A. For the lines going down wards I used rectangle shape from the letter S and use the shape builder tool to unite the two shapes together.
Hence as a result, the final outcome of my initial is shaped like a triangle.
As challenging as it sounds, I did try using freehand drawing with my mouse and laptop cursor. I did managed to create some designs that I found to be quite good.
Fig 2.0 - Brush Tool Experiment
Part of my experimentation process I tried creating a design with a signature design. Figured that it didn't suit me well. As a result, I chose to go with my first design instead.
Task 2B: Collateral
Animation
Fig 2.1 - Animation attempt
For my animation, I made it so that it's like fast and straight forward. Apart from that it's a minimal type of animation. It kinda resembles that it moves on a straight line just like how I designed it to be. I animated from left to right to show that it moves from my first name A to my second name S and thats why I animated it that way.
Mock Ups
As for the mock ups, I have decided that the main colors of my mock up would be black and white. I experimented different mock ups this include note book, tote bag, stamp, sticker and mug.
At last, I have chose these 4 items:
- Tote bag
- Notebook
- Stamp
- Badge
Instagram Feed
For this instagram layout feed, I figured that since my mock ups are mostly colored Black and White. I created a feed that would best compliment the colors well. So I went with this minimalist looking feed.
Fig 2.4 - Instagram Layout Feed
For this part of my feed, I have used a shape of triangle to make a silhouette for the background. This is because since my initial is shaped like a triangle I figured out that this would best fit for the background. It also compliments well with the colors I chose as I wanted to keep it minimalist.

FEEDBACK
Week 6
The feedback given by Mr Vinod was that I did not have any meaning to my design therefore It was pointless. As a result of this I went back to square one and brainstormed on why I created the design.
Week 7
The meaning behind my application needs to more meaningful. Needs to have relation to the initial's design.
Week 8
Independant Learning Week
REFLECTION
Experience
First and foremost, I did enjoy my time designing the initials of my name. Although It was quite challenging when trying to find a meaning behind the design, I enjoyed both the thinking and designing process. Throughout the process of this task 2, the most challenging part was trying to animate my design as animating is part of my weakness. On the hand, I did enjoy and gained valuable experience during my animating process. Lastly, As I've had prior experience doing mock ups. I picked up really fast and did my mock ups with ease.
Observation
I observed that small details in a design can make a huge difference in the outcome. These little details if created in a many designs can really fill in the bigger picture. As a result, I have observed how important these small details are in a design. Even reflecting to my own work, I have realised that these details plays a huge part in the long run.
Findings
Throughout my time doing Task 2. I found out that having a meaning behind a design is very important. This is because it creates a special bond between you and your design. Furthermore, It provides a sense of though process to the viewers as It helps the viewer understand the meaning and the process behind the design. I thought this was really mind blowing as now I understand having a meaning to a design is as vital as the design process.
FURTHER READING
This book introduces the reader to the role of Research in Graphic Design and the vital role it plays. The discipline of graphic design can be found in variety of ways.
Fig 3.3 - Reference from the introduction
The author mentioned in the book that the first task facing the designer is to
research their field of study, to acquire knowledge of
what already exists in that area, and the visual
languages which can be directly associated with the specific target audience or market for the design.
- This helped the designer to narrow down the target audience
- To specialise in the specific field
- Maximise design opportunity.
