LECTURES

Week 11

Mr Vinod assigned us a task to express a typographical social message, greeting or a message, that is relevant to the campus community at Taylor's University.  Only minor graphical elements or visuals are allowed in our design or message. For the colours, we were only told to use Red, White & Black as it resembles the colours of the Taylors University's logo.

As per usual, we had to start with our sketches. In doing so I did some research to brainstorm ideas to keep my creativity level high.

We were given a full list of greetings to choose from and I chose Valentine's Day.

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK

Before starting off doing my sketches, I did some on research on existing designs to get some inspiration for my design piece.  As my chosen topic is Valentines Day, I researched something similar to Valentine's Day but not the exact same topic, thus I chose mothers day instead as it resembles a similar content. Moreover, It fits the color scheme and most design involves hearts which I will be heading towards in designing my piece.

Sketches

These sketches I took inspiration from the researched I did on the mothers day stickers. The reason I used mainly calipgraphy for most of the sketches is because I thought that it would suit well with the Valentines Day theme.

PIC

After getting feedbacks from Mr Vinod, I have decided to proceed with no 2 and 3 as it was more suitable to become a sticker.

Digitalization

Utilising the feedback given by Mr Vinod, I started working on my digitisation process of the two different designed i chose to move forward with. For this first design I designed a ribbon where the letter valentines would be on it. The choice of typeface I went with was a calipgraphy style. I thought that It would best suit the valentines day theme.

After receiving feedback from Mr Vinod. My design was completely out. Thus I had to go with the other design and I went straight to work on the second design. For this I used a brush tool and kinda free draw the letters with some curves.

Mr Vinod approved of my design. He said that I should experiment on different colours for the background as black was too dark to match with the Valentines Day theme. I went on and experimented with these different colours but I still preferred the black background as If I was to use red for the background the letter wouldn't pop out as much as it kinda camouflages together. As a result, I went on and stuck with the black background.

After many thoughts, I have decided to stick with the black background and with the help of the white outline It kinda contrast well with the other colours so that It doesn't look to vague.

FEEDBACK

Week 11

My design was too basic and I had to redesign the whole thing. Choice of typeface was alright but the ribbon is too over worked and the typeface is too thin. With this feedback, I had to choose another design to move forward with.

Week 12

Mr Vinod told me to make an outline and a background that revolves around the letterform. Not to forget the white outline as it important for it to work as a sticker. Mr Vinod also mentioned about having a different take on the Taylors Logo to match the sticker design style.

Week 13

Overall Mr Vinod liked my design. However, he just didn't like the choice of colour I have put out for the background. He told me to do some experiment on some other colours and if I still preferred the Black background I have to justify.

REFLECTION

Experience

With the experienced, I have gained from doing the previous tasks, attending classes as well as watching Mr Vinod's very detailed Youtube Videos, I can say that I have manoeuvred my way through task 3B quite easily compared to the first few tasks. However, during my digitalization part, I did stumble across some challenges that are designing the letters as I chose to design them myself. All and all it was a good learning experience. When it comes to creating the sticker, It was my first time but I manage to do it with ease although It did get a little confusing when it comes to uploading the sticker on Telegram.

Observation

Coming in Task 3B, having a look through the MIB I was quite skeptical at first, the thought of designing and creating a sticker on Telegram seems to be quite the challenge. Having started the task it was as bad as it looked in the MIB. Just needed to be warier of the spaces when creating a sticker and make sure to have white outlines to maximize its capability of becoming a sticker.

Findings

I've learned to free draw letters using the brush tool and of course to create and design a sticker. When creating a sticker, I learned that the wording/text can't be too thin and needs to have a white outline. With the feedbacks given by Mr Vinod try to maximize the space and don't leave too many blank spaces.
